Subseries E: Written by Edward Hopper to his family
Subseries comprises outgoing correspondence written by Edward Hopper to members of his family: his sister, Marion Hopper; and his parents, Elizabeth Griffiths Smith and Garret Henry Hopper.
Letters to Marion Hopper are dated between 1925 and 1965, and primarily discuss financial and logistical matters, including the G. H. Hopper estate and the upkeep of family homes in Nyack, New York. Several letters also include notes from Josephine Nivison Hopper.
Earlier letters, written between 1906 and 1911, were sent to Hopper’s sister, mother, and father during his travels in Europe. The majority of letters are sent from Paris, along with other cities including London, Madrid and Berlin. Topics include Hopper’s impressions of European cities, his daily activities, and inquiries into his family’s health and well-being.
